Part of the art of planning is determining the sequence of actions that best accomplishes the mission. Ideally, commanders plan to accomplish a mission with simultaneous actions throughout an AO. However, operational reach, resource constraints, and the size of the friendly force may limit a commander’s ability to do this. In these cases, commanders phase operations. Phasing is a way to view and conduct operations in manageable parts.
